Ayurvedic Medicine, Other Alternative Treatments, Becoming Official In India

(Extraído de huffingtonpost.ca)

India's new government has launched a drive to promote the country's ancient therapies as it seeks to cash in on the multi-billion dollar global market for holistic medicine.

India claims to have natural remedies for everything from cancer to the common cold, but ministers say it has failed to capitalise on its traditions as the world has woken up to alternative medicine.

Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a teetotal vegetarian who practices yoga daily, has said he wants the world to make Ayurveda "a way of life" -- and in doing so expand India's share of the growing global market for holistic medicine.

Earlier this month he appointed India's first minister for Ayurveda, yoga, naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and homeopathy -- known as the AAYUSH ministry -- and has also called for an international yoga day.

"Call it whatever -- Ayurvedic medicines or herbal medicines or traditional medicines -- the global market is estimated at about $100 billion today," former health minister Harsh Vardhan told a recent conference on Ayurveda in New Delhi.

"India's share in this is negligible because quality standards are not maintained to international specifications. The government has decided to address this lacuna."

Ayurvedic medicine -- which means the "science of life" in Sanskrit -- treats the physical and mental sources of illness through, for example, prescribing herbs in conjunction with yoga or massage.

Much of the knowledge has been passed on through the generations by word of mouth and predates written records, but two volumes of remedies and prescriptions have survived, called the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita.

- 'High priority' -

Critics say that Ayurvedic remedies have no proven curative properties for disease, and instead work as a placebo.

"It's like superstition -- it's in your head that it helps. But in real life, you need actual pharma drugs," said P.K. Goyal, a Delhi-based physician.

But Modi, who as a young man wandered the Himalayas on a spiritual quest, said Ayurvedic remedies should be seen as complementary to modern medicine.

"If a person adopts Ayurveda, he can protect himself against various infections," said the 64-year-old.

"(Formerly) health was a part of life. But today we have outsourced health... we consult one doctor and then the other."

In India, domestic companies such as Dabur, Emami and the Himalaya group have pioneered herbal products, combining ancient traditional medicine with cutting-edge technology to make pills, creams and oils.

Ayurvedic centres and clinics have also sprung up in Europe and the United States in recent years, and global chain The Body Shop has created its own range of Ayurvedic products.

On Tuesday the new AAYUSH minister, Shripad Yesso Naik, said he would make promoting Ayurveda a "high priority" as he began his newly-created role.

"We will do whatever it takes to make India a healthy India in the days ahead," he said, praising the preventive qualities of yoga and Ayurveda.

According to the World Health Organization, 65 per cent of India's rural population uses Ayurvedic remedies, mostly due to poor access to modern health facilities.

Modi has vowed to provide affordable healthcare to India, where nearly 25 per cent of the population lives on less than $1.25 a day and more than 40 million people have been pushed into poverty because of the cost of medical treatment.

His Hindu nationalist government, which swept to power in May on a promise to revive India's flagging economy, has already announced plans to establish a state-funded Ayurvedic research centre and hospital.

And many are already converted to the drive. One fan at the conference -- where everything from massage chairs to digestion and blood pressure pills were on display -- needed no further persuading.

"It's natural, so no side effects, and it's cheap," said 20-year-old Delhi student Ashima Beri.

"Honestly, these worked on my acne better than any other cream or drug."

Minister favours integrating all systems of medicine to help sick

(Extraído de deccanherald.com)

Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader has said that the Central government should frame a policy on integrating all systems of medicine  for providing effective relief to those suffering from diseases.
Speaking at Ayush Utsav, a two-day meet of Ayush practitioners organised by the department of Ayush, KAUP Board, Karnataka Homeopathy Board, National Integrated Medical Association, Karnataka Govt Ayush Medical officers Association(KGAMOA) and Karnataka chapter of Ayush Federation of India (AFI) here on Saturday, he said that best of ayurveda, homoeopathy, siddha and other alternative Indian medicines should be encouraged and integrated with allopathic medicine to make treatment effective.
“Ayurveda and other traditional methods could be extremely effective as preventative measures and should be integrated into the mainstream medicine systems. With the policy, uniform system can be followed across the country,” he said.

Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) should recommend to the Central government to establish Ayush University in each State, to carry out research in the field. Karnataka state government is committed to start an Ayush University next year, the Minister announced.
He said that the focus should be on rolling out disease prevention programmes rather than setting up more and more hospitals. Chief Minister had announced setting up of Ayush hospital in one taluk in each district. Accordingly, the work on Ayush hospital in Ullal of Mangaluru taluk has commenced. Ayurvedic doctor will be recruited to each Primary Health Centre to promote the system of medicine.
The Minister said that through KPSC , the State government will recruit 583 Ayurvedic doctors. Those who are working in government sector on contract basis are likley to be absorbed. The Ayurveda practitioners should mandatorily follow Ayurvedic system of medicine to gain confidence of the patients.
He said that farmers should be encouraged to grow medicinal plants instead of tobacco.
Minister for Forests and Ecology Ramanath Rai said that the forest department has decided to set up herbal garden in the name of Deyi Baidedi, mother of Koti Chennaiah at Padumale. There is a need to conserve medicinal plants in Western Ghats. Change in life style and exercise will help in maintaining good health.
CCIM President Dr Vanitha Murali Kumar said that the biggest strength of Ayush is that it is legalised in India. However, the Ayush has failed to reach out the commonman. It is catering to the needs of the elite class.
There is a need to create awareness on Ayush.
“The Central Council of Indian Medicine had formulated a nine-month bridge course in allopathy to train practitioners of Indian systems of medicine in prescribing essential allopathy drugs at primary healthcare level.  "This bridge course is not intended for private practice, but it is only for rural health service of the government.
The course is for those Indian System of Medicine graduates, who want to join rural service,” she added.
The State government can apply to the Centre seeking funds under National Ayush Mission to set up Ayush University and CCIM will extend its support,” she added.

The benefits of seasonal foods

(Extraído de en-maktoob.news.yahoo.com)

Ripe mangoes in summer, dandelion greens, beans and blueberries in spring and roasted chestnuts in winter. Eating what nature produces according to seasons is said to be the natural way to good health. In 2010, locally grown produce was voted the top food trend by nearly 2,000 chefs worldwide.

A research conducted in 1997 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in London indicated a marked difference in the nutritional quality of milk in winter and summer. According to the research, cows that were fed on preserved food in winter as compared to fresh food in winter yielded milk that was nutritionally different in the two seasons.

Yet another research in Japan found that spinach grown in summer had a higher vitamin content as compared to the same leafy green grown in winter. The slightest shift in weather can create a marked dissonance in nutrition, so you can imagine how this affects produce that has to be refrigerated and transported across miles.

In the UAE, where a significant percentage of the food produce is imported, the habit of seasonal eating is in a highly altered state. Having said that, the UAE is growing more and more of its own vegetables and fruit and this augurs extremely well for its people in the long run.

We look at the various reasons why eating seasonal produce makes the maximum health sense apart from the ecological benefits of a shrinking carbon footprint.

Many health and medical experts agree that seasonal eating is a good habit as nature intended certain nutrients, vitamins, minerals and enzymes to be made available to you and help you deal with the requirements of the weather. When a fruit or vegetable is plucked from the tree at its naturally ripening time, it retains not just its true flavour but also most of its nutrition.

Dubai-based nutritionist and health coach Marcella Manon says, "The nutritional cycle of nature is an annual cycle; it takes a year for all of the nutritional needs of the body to be met.

Although there are four seasons, there are three primary harvests: fall, spring, and summer. Eating with the seasons allows you to eat as nature intended, reaping the health benefits of a diet that is diverse and naturally detoxifying."

She outlines the important nutritional requirements of the human body in each season which is an evolution-driven programme that is still the mainstay of our relationship to food, largely unchanged despite the progress and urban mass migrations across the globe. The seasonal caveat on winter (a period for storage of proteins and fats), for example, is still traditionally true and remains relevant for us in the UAE as well, despite the absence of extreme winter temperatures.

"Although winter is not severe here, there is nevertheless a drastic drop in temperatures as compared to summer where we experience 45C and even 47C," says Manon. "Winter temperatures dip to 15 or below, so although the cold is not severe, the drop in temperatures still requires our bodies to adjust to the season and go through the same requirements as anywhere else on the globe where there are extreme winters."

Given nature's logic, what happens when you choose to opt for the produce that is available round the year? "Non-seasonal foods require bending of natural rules in order for them to endure the improper season, therefore, these foods are often full of pesticides, waxes, preservatives and other chemicals that are used to make them look fresher than they are," says Manon. Eating seasonal foods from local geographic areas helps prevent food intolerances, allergies, obesity, Type-2 diabetes and other chronic diseases, she adds.

Some of the obvious benefits to be derived by eating seasonal fresh foods are:

• Helping your body to return to its natural rhythm.

• Consuming fresher foods, which are more tasty and contain higher concentration of antioxidants than non-seasonal foods.

• Benefiting from rotating your foods, thereby preventing your body from developing food intolerances.

• Helping yourself reach healthy weight goals as well as enjoy high energy levels.

• Support local farmers and markets.

Do allopathic doctors support seasonal eating?

Perhaps not, says Dr Ashraf Nasim of DNA Health Corp, Founder & CEO DNA Health Corp, a centre for Integrative Medicine and Wellness, Board Certified Internal Medicine (USA), Board Certified Integrative Medicine (USA), Board Certified Nephrology & Hypertension (USA). "Allopathic doctors in general are not supportive of such concepts."

Dr Nasim, an allopath, also practises Integrative Medicine that assimilates other streams of alternative medicine in his therapies following Dr Andrew Weil, the father of Integrative Medicine. He quotes extensively from other therapies about the benefits of seasonal eating.

"From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, there are certain seasons which correlate with types of foods one should consume to maintain health and wellness. For instance, in spring, one should consume bitter flavours (for example, dandelion, rocket, watercress, chicory) to support liver detoxification and cleansing of the blood.

"In the Middle East, chicory and rocket salads are esteemed to have this healthful effect.

"From an Ayurvedic medicine perspective, it is also recommended to eat foods that are seasonal based on the individual food's characteristics (hot, cold, etc.). Foods with characteristics of heat, such as peppers or ginger, should be consumed in the winter months and cold foods, such as cucumbers and fruits, should be consumed in the summer months.

"Foods are usually harvested when they are at their peak and typically have the most flavour and nutrients, so eating seasonal food tends to be tastier, healthier and better for the environment. Also, by eating freshly harvested produce, you will be rotating your foods and, therefore, potentially preventing your body from developing intolerances to certain foods.

"Many foods that are imported are sprayed with pesticides to prevent them from rotting while on the farm and/or on their transportation journey to the consumer. This can have detrimental effects on your health. In addition, some fruits are picked "unripe" and then treated with chemicals to hasten their ripening. But the proof is in the nutrient and antioxidant content, which tends to be higher in locally grown seasonal foods."

Our ancestors, says Dr Nasim, ate seasonal foods because it was a natural way of life for them. "We, on the other hand, can make informed choices of opting for foods that are grown seasonally and coordinate our diets with the cycles of nature's seasons," he says.

Your guide to seasonal eating in the UAE

How evolution linked seasons and human body's food requirements

Season: Winter/Fall

Evolutionary theme: Storing Protein and Fat

During winter and fall, with their cold and dry days, the diet calls for foods that are high in protein and fat. Your body potentially craves soups, nuts, warm grains, and protein such as meat and fish to stay warm. Blubber in Alaska, nuts in America and avocados and coconuts in Mexico are examples of how evolution and nature ordered the perfect sources of essential fatty acids for these geographic locations.

• Foods to consider: Soups, stews, nuts, heavier grains (such as rye and quinoa), meat and fish. Furthermore, cranberries and beets act as blood purifiers to balance the heavy winter meals.

Season: Spring

Evolutionary theme: A time for cleansing

In the spring, low-fat and high chlorophyll foods support detoxification and fertilise the good bacteria in the intestinal tract, strengthening your immune system. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spring is associated with the liver, one of the body's primary detoxifying organs. Synergistically, this is the time of the year for dandelion and other bitter greens to be consumed. These bitter greens support the liver's function and are blood purifiers.

• Foods to consider: Green vegetables, leafy greens, sprouts, berries and cherries.

Season: Summer

Evolutionary theme: Hydration and energy

Natural high-carbohydrate foods such as fruits and vegetables constantly help to keep the body cool and hydrated. A balanced diet prevents you from overheating and drying out during the long, hot summer days. It is somewhat important to consider that a non-cooling diet within this season predisposes your system to reactive mucus production. Colds in the flu season (fall/winter) can be prevented all the way back in the summer. Moreover, apples are the ideal end of summer purgative to flush out all of your body heat before the winter season emerges.

• Foods to consider: Fresh fruits and vegetables. For instance, have apples and pomegranates to cleanse the body and strengthen the immune system before the flu season.

If you live in the UAE, you must be wondering how to benefit from this logic given the enormous variety of food from all over the world all year round. The good news is there is an increasing abundance of local fresh produce in the UAE that is making a huge impact on the community. Here are some pointers to help you opt for sensible grocery shopping in the UAE,

• Add diversity to your shopping routine: pay a weekly visit to a farmer's market in your community and enjoy buying the seasonal products on offer.

• Visit local supermarkets to enjoy the diversity of locally grown fruits and vegetables at reasonable prices.

• Check out local organic supermarkets.

• While choosing seasonal foods you are perfectly safe buying fresh fruits and vegetables from places like Lebanon, India, Oman, Egypt and Iran which are close neighbours to the UAE, hence require less travel time.

Your guide to eating seasonally in the UAE:

• When the weather cools down, it is the perfect time of the year to indulge in heavier, warmer meals. Winter/fall local foods include dates, carrots, cauliflower, mushrooms and all the varieties of lamb meats and goat cheeses the region has to offer. This is also the time of the year to be adventurous with nuts and seeds.

• As the weather starts to get warmer, it is time for a spring cleansing. Foods right for this season are mangoes, apricots, strawberries, oranges, leafy greens, dandelion, artichokes, asparagus and fresh herbs.

• During summer months, eat more salads with green leaves, cucumber, tomatoes and don't be afraid to toss in some seasonal fruits like apples, lychees, watermelon, plums and figs.

UAE farmers a growing tribe

The growing community of local farmers in the UAE is doing a sterling job in promoting the values of seasonal produce. The variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs being grown locally are a consumer's delight. Miriam Finnerty of Ripe Middle East, Supporting Local Farmers, says:

"We're all about supporting local farmers and providing really high-quality, local, seasonal and organic produce to our customers. There are a number of reasons why eating local produce makes good eco-sense. Firstly, you're helping to develop the local agricultural industry and by supporting local farmers, they can increase their business, develop growing plans and work to provide customers with a greater variety of produce year on year.

"Local produce also doesn't come with the air miles so, ultimately, it's fresher and packed full of more flavour, because its journey time from the field to your fridge is much shorter. And because produce doesn't travel as far, there's less impact on the environment; produce that travels to the UAE from distant countries will have used a lot of carbon dioxide, greenhouse gases, diesel, air miles and noise pollution, just to get those peppers on your plate. But with local produce, the impact is reduced.

"Additionally, because local produce hasn't travelled as far, it's cheaper and more affordable than its overseas counterparts. And this in turn makes it more accessible to everyone, something that Ripe takes seriously. We want to make sure the community in which we operate is not only aware of the fantastic local produce that is available, from farms right here in the UAE, but has easy access to it. This is why we continue to build strong relationships with our local farmers and educate the community about the local produce available."

'Homeopathy CAN cure Ebola': Doctors attack 'armchair intellectuals' at World Health Organisation who refuse to let them treat deadly virus with snake venom remedy

(Extraído de dailymail.co.uk)

By GETHIN CHAMBERLAIN IN MONROVIA, JAMES ROBERTSON IN CALIFORNIA AND SANJAY JHA IN MUMBAI FOR MAILONLINE

Homeopathy could have cured Ebola if the World Health Organisation had not stepped in to prevent a trial, according to members of a group who travelled to Liberia hoping to try out remedies including rattlesnake venom and the aphrodisiac Spanish Fly.

The four doctors were the subject of widespread ridicule online after MailOnline revealed that they travelled to the West African country intent on using Ebola victims to put their controversial theories to the test.

But today the homeopaths dismissed their critics as 'armchair intellectuals' and insisted they made the 'dramatic and traumatic trip' to Liberia because they had a duty to try to help.

Organisers of the trip are still inviting donations from supporters of homeopathy - whose ranks include Prince Charles - to fund a second attempt to run an Ebola trial in Liberia.

Homeopathy's critics claim patients receive nothing more than sugar pills and water because the active ingredients are so diluted that no molecules remain.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, the homeopaths - who are all qualified medical doctors - revealed that they intended to use their time at the Ganta United Methodist Hospital to try to find a homeopathic cure for Ebola.

From her office in Mumbai, India, Dr Medha Durge said they had been keen to try out their own medicines on Ebola victims alongside more conventional treatments.

'Is it possible that four doctors with over 25 years practice will go all the way to Liberia and harm/exploit Ebola victims? We wanted to help and that too because nothing was helping them,' she said.

'Also we wanted to give homeopathy along with the drips.'

She confirmed that they had used homeopathic treatments on patients, despite the instructions from health officials in the capital Monrovia not to do so. She said she had not felt the need to quarantine herself after returning to India but was monitoring her own condition for any signs of the disease.

She said she had read about the outbreak online and when people started dying in large numbers she decided that homeopathy could hold the key to a cure.

'As the momentum for homeopaths to do something built up I got the opportunity and took it,' she said. 'We treated all types of cases in the hospital with homeopathic medicines. The response was good to the extent that we have a request from them to promote and teach homeopathy there.'

She said it was unfair to suggest that they were exploiting victims - as some commentators have done - for their own ends.

'None of the people thought that in Liberia. We helped, they accepted. These critics are armchair intellectuals.'

Her colleague Dr Ortrud Lindemann, who runs a clinic in Barcelona, insisted that homeopathy could prove useful in fighting the Ebola virus.

'As doctors we have the duty to do everything we can to alleviate the suffering of those poor people stricken with Ebola and we hoped that homeopathic remedies might be able to help in that,' she told MailOnline.

'We have natural medicines that can treat sudden high fever, diarrhoea, chronic headaches, all of which are symptoms of Ebola and therefore could be used to help patients.'

MailOnline tracked Dr Lindemann, who qualified as a doctor in 1986 in Germany, to the Marenostrum private clinic on Calle Fontanella in an upmarket shopping district of central Barcelona off Plaza Cataluña, which specialises in natural therapies.

'There is not yet one specific medicine widely available for the treatment of Ebola but there are homeopathic remedies that have been proven successful in treating other epidemics such as cholera.'

There she claimed that their efforts had torpedoed by an official from the World Health Organisation, who had objected to their methods.

'We were disappointed not to be allowed to treat the Ebola patients as we had intended after we were stopped by the Ministry of Health. It seems that a WHO official objected to what we had planned so we were not allowed to carry out our project,' she said.

'We presented our project several months ago and had been invited to the hospital to help in the treatment of Ebola patients but then when we arrived we were told not to go near them.

'Instead we spent our time treating other patients in the Ganta hospital which is in crisis because there are not enough doctors to deal with normal medical complaints. So we helped in the hospital under the supervision of the medical director.'

She dismissed criticism of their methods as unfair.

'To say we offer false hope is ridiculous,' she said. 'We were four qualified doctors who answered a call for volunteers and put our own lives in danger to try and help. If there is something to be done on top of the conventional treatment to help a patient, then we have a duty to try.'

Back in Mumbai, Dr Durge claimed that the Liberian government had been 'very helpful, kind and accepting of homeopathy. They appreciated us arriving there under the circumstances.'

However, senior health officials involved in the fight against Ebola in Liberia told MailOnline they had not realised the doctors were homeopaths and that when they found out, they gave strict instructions that they were not to use their techniques on patients.

The organisation that organised the expedition, the Liga Medicorum Homeopathica Internationalis, is still inviting donations to fund what it describes as 'international homeopathic projects'.

Its website states that all donations are tax deductable and that 'the purposes of these … are the promotion and the support of research and of education in the field of medical homeopathy worldwide.'

Another of the homeopaths, Dr Richard Hiltner, spoke to MailOnline at his office in Ojai, California. The office is decorated with dream-catchers and there are glass sculpted butterflies scattered around a brick fireplace, with tranquil music echoing quietly around the cosy home. There are numerous medical qualification certificates on the walls.

'The trip was dramatic and traumatic,' he said.

'It was a rough trip. There was no running water for five days, the roads were incredible bumpy and we'd be doing journeys back and forth every day. The electricity was on and off the whole time.'

He said they all underwent WHO training in using personal protective equipment - the 'space suits' that medical staff in close contact with Ebola sufferers have to wear - and felt safe.

'I wasn't afraid to catch Ebola when I was there. There's always a risk but we were well prepared and knew what was going on,' he said.

He revealed that they had consulted other leading homeopaths in the hope of coming up with a potential cure that could be tested on Ebola patients.

'I've used homeopathy for 40 years and there's a lot of research various epidemics including Yellow Fever, which is similar to Ebola in symptoms,' he said.

'When we went to do this we had some of the very best international homeopathy physicians who we consulted and worked with for many months before hand.

'And again we looked at which remedies would fit the pattern to cure, we had some good ideas about what medicine works and what would be beneficial. Again, we needed the experience so that was our preparation.'

He confirmed that rattlesnake venom and Spanish Fly were among the possible cures that they wanted to test out.

And he said he was disappointed that conventional medicine had closed its mind to homeopathy.

'This method could have and should have been used a lot earlier but unfortunately it hasn't worked out like that. There are various things that could have been done right away while they were trying to develop immunisations.

'What needs to be done is to end the feud, stop calling people names, and start working together. See what we have in common and what we can work with. All doctors need to work together.'

Dr Hiltner is a member of the executive committee of group that organised the trip and is hoping to recoup some of his costs from them.

'I paid for everything. They are trying to get donations to make up for it but I paid for everything initially. All I'm asking for in return of the fundraising is my airfare.'

The fourth member of the team, Dr Edouard Broussalian, 52, from Geneva, did not respond to requests to be interviewed.

But in a post on his own website, now deleted, he insisted that the mission offered 'a unique opportunity to demonstrate the value of homeopathy. Of course they [their critics] will challenge us as to whether the 'cured patients' were really ill in the first place, but we hope to treat such large numbers that no challenge will be possible. The manufacturers of experimental vaccines will then have to change their opinions.'

Staff at the Ganta hospital and health officials in Monrovia have confirmed that the trip's organisers are attempting to get approval to mount a second mission, this time with permission to treat Ebola victims with homeopathy.

Dr Lindemann said all they were doing was responding to a request from the WHO for assistance in fighting Ebola.

'We answered a call from the WHO, which earlier this year in one of the crisis meetings asked for CAM practitioners – Complimentary and Alternative Medicine - to work alongside conventional medicine to tackle the deadly virus.'

'But then we were prevented from doing so. We have now asked for details as to what exactly they want from us,' she said.

The possibility that homeopaths may yet get to treat Ebola patients has alarmed many people working to tackle the spread of the disease, which has claimed more than 5,000 lives in the latest outbreak and which continues to resurface in new hotspots despite some successes in bringing it under control.

Mike Noyes, the head of humanitarian response at UK charity ActionAid, which has teams who support clinics in Sierra Leone and Liberia, told Mail Online: 'With this crisis, you can't be offering false hope.

'There is no scientific evidence that homeopathy has any impact on dealing with viral disease like Ebola.

'Coming in from the outside with these unproven approaches is damaging to the response and bringing the disease under control.'

There is no suggestion that Prince Charles has donated any money to fund the Ebola mission, but his interest in homeopathy is well-documented. In 2006 he told the World Health Assembly that homeopathy was 'rooted in ancient traditions that intuitively understood the need to maintain balance and harmony with our minds, bodies and the natural world'.

Ayurveda is medicine with intelligence, modern medicine is like a bullet'

(Extraído de rediff.com)

‘As such classical Ayurveda is shrinking. Not because people don’t want it but because it is not properly placed in the public mind.’

‘Health is more and more becoming a commodity to be purchased. Whereas in Ayurveda, it is held that health is a way of life.’

‘Ayurveda is not only evolving, it is also changing. It is also growing. At the same time there are lot of challenges being faced within Ayurveda.’

Ayurvedic expert Dr G G Gangadharan on how the ancient Indian medical practice needs to be propagated in the country of its origin.

In India, scholars who work with boundless passion devoting their life to field have the grievance that New Delhi rarely takes a correct view of them or their issues. Dr G G Gangadharan, (below left) 54, is a joint director of the Institute Ayurveda and Integrative Medicines. He and Darshan Shankar, one of the co-founders of Foundation for Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions are brilliant scholars, are not heard in New Delhi as much as they should be.

Just recently there was a huge hue and cry when former health minister Harsh Vardhan commented that Ayurveda treatment should be used more at New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences. A few doctors in New Delhi complained, out of ignorance, that the Ayurveda prescriptions have to be first tested in a proper scientific format.

The fact is neither Vardhan, nor the Prime Minister’s Office, or the health ministry, or most of the doctors practising allopathy are aware of or ready to acknowledge the huge work that is being done at FRLHT and at few other Ayurvedic institutions outside the national capital for the last two decades.

The New Delhi elite’s ignorance in recognising Ayurveda as a viable option for the common man’s health issues is not surprising in view of the powerful lobbyists of national and multinational pharmaceuticals companies. The anti-Ayurvedic lobby all over India is so strong that it simply doesn’t allow a public debate on Ayurveda to be elevated to the next level where the common man could find the system scientifically trustworthy.

In interviews to rediff.com’s Sheela Bhatt, Bangalore-based Darshan Shankar and Dr Gangadharan speak strongly in support of Ayurveda. The government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that rides on the nationalist plank has a bigger responsibility to take up issues like Ayurveda. The ancient science of life needs a push to become as international as yoga.

Dr Gangadharan is known to have expertise in Panchkarma, Lepanam and infertility treatment and on authentic Ayurvedic methods of diagnosis -- specially pulse diagnosis and treatment. Dr Gangadharan is a soft-spoken Malayali who has studied in Tamil Nadu and now works in Karnataka. He and Shankar's life mission is to take local health traditions to the grassroots level in rural and urban India.

After getting a degree in Ayurveda, Dr Gangadharan worked in Arya Vaidya Pharmacy, Coimbatore. He has done extensive work in making traditional Ayurvedic formulations -- classical and proprietary. Dr Gangadharan has also co-authored many books on medicinal plants and has more than dozen research papers to his credit. He has been an Ashoka Fellow too. He has done his PhD in rheumatoid arthritis from the Tilak Ayurveda Vidyapeeth, Pune.

In this detailed interview Dr Gangadharan says why India needs a national movement to ensure that Ayurveda reaches every home in the country.

From American President Barack Obama to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a national health policy remains an unresolved challenge. Tell us where the Ayurveda industry stands in the Indian landscape today.

Ayurveda is the science of healing and rejuvenation. Its scope is beyond the physical existence of life. So, from the perspective of industry, it is a small, minute part of Ayurveda. In 2013-14, the income of the Ayurveda industry was only Rs 9,000 crore -- that is, people bought Rs 9,000 crore worth of Ayurveda products. But if you add extracts, drugs, cosmetics and health-related herbal products, it may go up further.

But as such classical Ayurveda is shrinking. Not because people don’t want it but because it is not properly placed in the public mind. Also because there are few carriers for this system who are able to carry this heavy science in a contemporary mode. Anyone who is working in the area of Ayurveda knows it is a science of the 21st century and beyond, is not at all an ancient system because the science is universal, and it has got a great outlook which comprises all time to come. It is written in such a way that it is applicable to any given time and any given geography.

What’s the challenge then?

All the principles of Ayuerveda are based on universal principles like heat and cold, five sense organs, pancham elements, these are all universal, will never change. Fire, air, sky, light etc were there 5,000 years back, they are there today. Only the form is changing, not the principle. So the challenge of our physicians today is how do you change the form of Ayurveda without distorting its principles.

Health is becoming more and more a commodity to be purchased. Whereas in Ayurveda it is held that health is a way of life, it has to be inculcated, it is a culture. This means strengthening the person and you are making the person self-reliant more and more. You are not taking away anything from him. Now people think that for everything they have to consult a doctor.

From a small toothache, headache, pimple, stomach upset, constipation, scratch on the skin, indigestion, for every little thing people are depending on doctors. This was not the case at all in India. It is not needed also. It is not advisable and it is not healthy. There is a way to live a healthy life. To do so one should gain some knowledge, this will keep your primary healthcare needs within the house. This was the culture of this country.

We have been doing this since the last generation, it’s not a very old thing. Now we have a Western ethos-centric worldview. Now we think that health can be purchased. It’s untrue. It can’t be. Longevity cannot be purchased, it has to be inculcated.

It is a culture, it is a way of life. For that Ayurveda gives suggestions on how to live healthy. Not only physical health, it talks about emotional health, spiritual health, it talks about the connection between the microcosm and the macrocosm, the man and the biosphere. All this is part of Ayurveda.

In India, Ayurveda has been practised as a home remedy for centuries. There is a big transaction happening within the family, within the village, community, which does not reflect in the turnover of Ayuerveda industry so don’t confuse Ayurveda with the industry's income alone. Ayurveda is the oil I apply on my head, the way I eat my food, the way my food habits are. This is all Ayurveda, this is what keeps me healthy. This will not come to the industry’s net.

What I mean to say is that the industry has also got a role. I don’t deny the role of industry, the role of hospital, the role of the practitioner, but there is more of a role for individual themselves in keeping the health. That is the science of Ayurveda.

When I was studying Ayurveda for seven years, I studied Sanskrit and Indian philosophy for two years. Then, we went to the jungles to understood nature. I got into spreading Ayurveda in Indian villages. We formed a group called the Lok Swasthya Parampara Samvardhan Samiti and I spent 25 years with them. That is my nurturing period.

Then between that I became an Ashoka Fellow. They wanted to take Ayurveda to the village to give a model of primary healthcare based on Ayurveda. It can be done. In 2003, I came to Bangalore to start this hospital. I don’t have a goal. I have a vision to spread Ayurveda globally.

I also did a management course in McGill University, Canada. The Foundation for the Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions is engaged fully in spreading awareness of Ayuerveda.

Indian insurance companies don’t acknowledge Ayurveda as a science. What are the attempts made by your institution and why has it not been done yet?

Last year, fortunately, insurance companies recognised Ayurveda and there are at least four-five companies who are ready to accept it. We are already getting reimbursed. Now we are trying for cashless transactions as allowed in modern science. The only thing is that the insurance regulation authority does not have clarity among its many agencies.

In a village, where they are giving a treatment for Rs 5, a hospital in Delhi will be charging Rs 5,000 for the same treatment. What is to be charged is not clarified because it is not in the mainstream. It will take four-five years to understand. Once insurance companies start reimbursing, a lot of other players will come out. There will be many quacks who will raise a bill for Panchkarma without actually applying it. Insurance companies want to bring in some kind of restriction so that the cover is not misutilised by people.

It is a shame that Ayurveda is getting insurance cover so late, after 63 years of independence. Last year a notification was issued, it’s in the government’s system. It says Ayurveda should be covered by insurance companies but it is limited to government Ayurveda hospitals and the National Rural Heath Mission accredited hospitals, and they have put one more line in the notification saying ‘other reputed hospitals’. It is very vague, so anyone can claim. Now, everyone will have to struggle to get into that ‘reputed’ bracket.

The more shameful thing is that employees of the department of defence, railways and banks cannot get Ayurvedic treatment. Former defence minister A K Antony is a follower of Ayurveda. I know his personal physician Dr Namboodri who has been treating him for years. He himself went to Antony in Delhi and pleaded, 'Sir, I came only for this purpose to meet you, otherwise you come to meet me but I came to meet you to request, please take Ayurveda as one of the systems for the defence personnel because they are asking for it.' As defence minister he didn’t do anything. Such a person who is devoted to Ayurveda didn’t do anything. Why is there such a mindset for Ayurveda? Why?

Why?

The reason is that they have to make some effort. When you take Ayurveda you have to make so many parallel systems. Dr M S Swaminathan, who helped bring the green revolution to India, is a devotee of Ayurveda. He doesn’t miss the one-month treatment at the Kottakkal Ayurvedashalya every year for the last so many years.

I was with him recently in Delhi in a meeting for the South East-Asian nutrition summit. He is 89 years old, and brimming with energy. His eyelids have become whitish but his face is shining and robust. I asked him what is the secret and he smiled and told me credit goes to Kottakkal. In a country like India, we should have a model of integrative medicine based on Ayurveda.

Ayurveda should be at the centre, you mean?

Yes. Other things should be peripheral. We take appropriate things from modern medicine where we need it. This is the model a country like India and China should have. They can have a Chinese medicine-based integrative mode. India should have an Ayurveda based integrative model. The US should have an allopathy based integrative model, no harm. But we don’t take leadership in health issues.

Even if you do lot about Ayurveda, the problem is that people who are committed for the cause are not in the realm of power. The department of Ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha and homoeopathy is there in New Delhi (Note: After this interview was conducted, the government upgraded it to a ministry). Every three years the secretary of Ayush changes. He is a bureaucrat who doesn’t have any idea. By the time he learns something about Ayurveda, it will be time for him to leave the department. And many a time people are so arrogant they have no value for the Indian system.

They do not propagate Ayurveda. Last year, can you believe that just one or two per cent of the total health budget was given to Ayush! The last secretary of Ayush has returned crores of rupees from his budget without putting it to good use. Not even a single person stands up in New Delhi and tells him this is not done. There is lethargy, there is no responsibility. The Ayurveda community is sleeping.

S Jalaja, secretary, Ayush, had recently shown a devotion for Ayurveda. She spent all the money and asked for more. She went to the field and took a genuine interest.

Is the Ayurveda industry growing?

Ayurveda is not only evolving, it is also changing. It is also growing. At the same time there are lot of challenges being faced within Ayurveda. One of the big challenges faced by Ayurveda is education. The education of Ayurveda is a big catastrophe. Reason is that the model we have selected as in any other development sector is the Western model.

The MBBS course is for five and a half years. Ayurveda is also five and a half years. They changed it to three semesters and we changed it to three semesters. They made one-year internship, we made one year, too. They made six-month internship, we made six-month internship. They have nine departments, we have nine. They have got 65 staff, we have got 65. What shameless copying!

Have you ever thought that Ayurveda has got its own pedigree? At least have one experimental model. Ayurveda has to be taught in an entirely different perspective. You cannot break Ayurveda into different departments. Ayurveda is a holistic tradition and it is written in a way that every chapter is inter-connected. Every shloka is connected. The whole book is to be read in its holistic perspective to understand Ayurveda. You mutilate, one part is learnt in the first year, other part in the third year, students who come out of the Ayurveda course are the biggest enemies of Ayurveda because they don’t know Ayurveda.

They want to practise allopathy actually. They want to get to allopathy through the backdoor. There are good people who want to practise Ayurveda but they are a minority, they are the ones who are spreading the awareness. Ayurveda is growing in villages.

Ayurveda is growing through good old Ayurveda practitioners in isolated places. All good vaidyas have a good practice. People are coming to them. The sad thing is that this is not being recorded or documented. If you document, they will become world winners.

Everyone is going with a begging bowl to America that, please accept Ayurveda as a science, please consider us too. Stop it. You do a good job in your country, establish a centre of excellence, document the cases, publish in some good journals, all the people will come to you. Everyone wants Ayurveda.

How will you do that?

Where do you go? The government is insensitive. People will force the government one day.

In the US herbal medicines were accepted by the government because the people forced them. You can import medicinal herbal products provided you don’t declare them as medicines. If you can have scientific record of it as a food supplement you can import in the US. It opened a big market for it. This is the first time Ayurvedic herbs went from India. You have to work like that.

We are documenting the cases being treated by vaidyas in a proper format which is universally accepted. If I get a case of hepatitis B virus infected liver we do tests, do the treatment, take all the documents, treat it, get it signed by the patient and by the doctor who treated it and publish it. People will come to you.

Ayurveda takes the man as a whole. Treat the man as a whole, take the herb as a whole. That is what Ayurveda says. Take the man as a whole, not only physical man, but the entire man. Soul and body. In tune with the external universe. And take the herb as a whole. No as a bio molecule. When you take a molecule, the synergy is lost. When synergy is lost, it will have side effects. Ayurvedic medicines do not have side effects because it is acting and it is correcting and balancing.

So if you take triphala today, I can guarantee you 95 per cent, get a good motion tomorrow morning, no doubt. Five per cent people may not get, there is a reason I can explain. I will change the dose. And while doing it, it will not harm your system. If you take any purgative of modern science, it will make your system die. You will get stomach upset, stomach cramps.

So we say Ayurveda is medicine with intelligence. Modern medicine is like a bullet. Just go forth and kill. Whatever is on the path. It is a beautiful concept. But this is not an easy thing. Every Tom, Dick and Harry cannot become a practitioner. Unless he goes through the stream of education which Ayurveda is propounding.

Don’t you think Ayurveda tourism has a big role to play in earning foreign exchange?

It is already happening. There are two kinds of Ayurveda tourism happening. My colleagues has done a study. Rs 23,000 crore is the income of one simple state like Kerala last year from tourism. In that 40 per cent according to him is due to Ayurveda. Some of them are going to good established wellness centres. Most of them are going to some good curative centres like Kottakkal or the Coimbatore Ayurvedic Pharmacy and other small places.

Do you have hope that the new government will act?

We have big hopes because Modi is supposed to be more nationalistic, more patriotic, more traditional etc. I would say the new government should look into Ayurveda education. We can’t change overnight because there will be resistance.

I would say let us have one or two Indian Institute of Technology-level institutions for Ayurveda. That will be a good investment. Give them seven-year course. Assure them of good outcome after that. Brilliant students should be taken with a good scholarship. Those people should become the ambassadors of Ayurveda. They will become good clinicians, good researchers, good teachers. This is what we need. Once it is done, that seed will grow. Start with one IIT-level institution for Ayurveda.

Do we have good Ayurvedic products?

Yes, we have. These are classical preparations. Since 2000 years we are making them in the same way. Only changes we are making is that we are concentrating it a little more so that it can reach people, and we are adding some kind of preservatives. That much distortion is there. But it is okay, it is understandable.

Some of our products are good. It has to be very closely examined. Most of the Ayurvedic shampoos have 97 per cent chemicals, only three per cent herbs. People use it thinking it is Ayurvedic shampoo. So you should categorise when you use the name Ayurveda as to what is the criteria you should use.

In Kerala not only Brahmins even Ezhavas helped Ayurveda grow. In Kerala everybody has contributed to Ayurveda science. It’s one of the richest places in India in terms of biodiversity. One of the earliest documentation of flora in 17th century was done here. Some 750 plants were documented which are still available. This came in 12 volumes of books. The first documentation of Kerala’s heritage in terms of Ayurvedic practice was done by the Portuguese.

In Bangalore, we have documented 8,000 plants. We have recorded all the secondary sources available in the country. We have the richest and most comprehensive database with all information on the 8,000 plants. It’s all digitised. All the 8,000 names are botanical variation names. And we have correlated all that information from public practice to the textual references.

Give us some dos and dont’s for urban people to lead a healthy life.

That is very difficult to say. Brahma muhurta is for people seeking better health and longevity. They should get up early in the morning. Brahma muhurtam can be described as between 4 and 4.30 or 5 and 5.30 am. That is the best time. All the ozone layer is clear, the atmosphere is clear and we can get very good oxygen. All the surrounding area is calm.

Your mind can expand. You can concentrate. And it says that not only getting up early is important; make sure that the previously eaten food is digested well. Don’t be dogmatic. You should have an early dinner so digestion will be proper. At night one should not take heavy food.

What’s your suggestion for those who are addicted to mobiles, internet and computers?

There are two-three things for them. Eat food of all tastes, don’t restrict to one. So select such food which has all the six tastes but according to the changing weather. If it is summer take more sweet, in winter a little sour is okay. Sweet is necessary too. Sweet is not sugar, it is ghee. Sweet is rice, wheat, starch. Starch with fibre is the most stable food one should have in larger quantity for more nourishment.

So, the first thing is take all the six tastes -- sweet, sour, salty, bitter, spicy and stringent. These are six tastes, you should have all these in your food. Variety is recommended. Second thing is ardhashaktya, that you take only half the food that your system, stomach wants. Take half food, one-fourth fill with water and leave one-fourth for gaseous exchange. Never keep a full stomach.

Third, exercise is a must. Every day you should walk. Walking is the best vyayam. Walking and swimming everyday helps. Fourth, have balance. Not going to the extremes is helpful. Don’t take extreme views of anything. Don’t be mauni, neither be talkative, don’t be angry, don’t go cold. Have a middle path so that everything is balanced, including your health.

Balance is the essence of Ayurveda. Inside the body, metal, nature... everything has to be in equilibrium. Ayurveda greatly recommends body massage everyday. If you can do with your own hand, it is considered best. And take a bath after massage so blood circulation is well maintained, everyday. Blood circulation is the starting point for healthy longevity. Two things Ayurveda says to be done everyday: vyayayam, exercise, and abhyangam, oil massage.

These two things with six varieties of food will make you healthy. Sleep on time, getting up on time is good, always. This is all physical health. But it gives more importance to mental and spiritual health. What it says through a shloka is that being empathetic about things happening around you is good for your own. If someone is in difficulty, feel for him and try to help. Don’t be greedy, just leave it for others. Control your body, the desires of your body. Control your weight, control your mind. This is the starting point of all illness.

One should only control, not stop. Control means not putting it down, not abandoning, just directing it. Have a selfish motive in others' prosperity. You take a selfish interest in others' things. If you follow these, your mind will be in a state of great peace. If you can get this state of mind, all other positive energy will come to you. This is told in health science. Not in psychology.

The first chapter of the first part of Ashtanga Hrudayam, the comprehensive book on Ayurvedic system composed by Vagbhata, is about peace of mind. These are two things we have to have. It doesn’t say that you go and sit under tree and do prayer to God. It says you help your community, your fellow beings. Be one with them. Then you’ll reach God.

For paediatric developmental disorders, homeopathy is the answer: Study

(Extraído de dnaindia.com)

Results of a study done by a Mumbai-based homeopath over a period of seven years, has revealed that homeopathyholds the key to managing paediatric developmental disorders. The research was conducted on 500 children with developmental disorders in India and Europe.

Dr Shreepad Khedekar, who anchored the study said, "We wanted to see the efficacy of homoeopathy in paediatric developmental disorders. The children were in the age group of 3-15 years and their parents were counselled for the treatment."

According to Dr Khedekar, these children were diagnosed with delayed development, autism, tuberous sclerosis, dyspraxia, border line Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and cerebral palsy.

"These children were put on corrective bio-therapy where each child's own growth radiant was stimulated by giving a specific combination of homeopathy medicines. These children were regularly followed up in the period of 2-7 years," said Dr Khedekar.

Dr Khedekar further added that children were followed up individually by two European paeditricians while a population genetics expert also monitored each child to infer the pre and post treatment differences.
"We found that 80% of the children were completely cured and living a physically and psychologically balanced life. The focus of the treatment through homeopathy was not to treat the isolated symptoms of the developmental disorder, but to treat the child as a whole and help in building up the personality traits of the child from the time of the treatment,"added Dr Khedekar.

The study also found that 60% of the developmental disorders were due to disharmony at home, troubled marriage, single parent, family disputes. Around 30% of children who were diagnosed with a developmental disorder were pre-term, had mothers with low BMI, genetic make-up, sub fertility, and job stress during pregnancy.

The study has been sent to be published in national and international medical journals.

Alternative medical treatment helps children with autism

(Extraído de ksat.com)

By Eileen Gonzales

SAN ANTONIO - An alternative type of medical treatment is proving to be successful in helping children with autism.

The technique, which combines homeopathy, chiropractic, Chinese and Western medicine, has helped some children so much that they’ve been removed from the autism spectrum.

Four-year-old Lake Laird is one of the those children.

Lake suffers from eczema and severe allergies.

On top of that, in January he was diagnosed as mildly autistic.

"Our goal is for our child to be healthy and happy," said Lake's mother, Dana Laird. "As a parent, when you see your child struggling you will do anything to help them; any alternative therapy."

Lake is being treated with a unique treatment called the Nambudripad allergy elimination technique.

"A lot of children with autism, they have a lot of food sensitivities. So if their autism is related to sensitivities and if we reverse the sensitivities, then the child gets better," said Patricia Lew, licensed acupuncturist and NAET practitioner.

Lew said children will see results in 10 to 100 treatments, depending on the severity of allergies.

For Lake, it only took a few treatments for his allergies to improve and his behavior to change.

Results were so drastic, doctors removed him from the autism spectrum.

The key to NAET treatments is small glass vials that contain a small amount of allergens.

"I do acupressure on the back, then acupuncture or acupressure while they hold the allergen for 10 to 20 minutes. Then they have to avoid it (the allergen) for 25 hours," said Lew.

With small children, a technique is used that involves the parents receiving part of the treatment while holding onto the child.

Although unusual, the technique is slowly gaining credibility among traditional doctors.

In 2005, a published study showed of 56 autistic children treated with NAET, 88 percent had their autism reversed.

"There's not really a medication that can take away autism," said osteopathic medicine Dr. Victoria Chang. "I think that people have a genetic predisposition to what they're exposed to in their environment, but definitely it's one of those things where I would say that they would benefit from it and you can see really drastic changes in their behavior."

Lake's mother admits she still doesn't understand how NAET works, but to her the results have been miraculous.

"When you find out about something like this, a diagnosis, you feel like the world has ended, and when you see something like this that helps and your child improve, you can't help but be so grateful," said Laird. "At the same time you want to shout it from the mountaintops, because if it's helping him, it's going to help someone else."

A double-blind, placebo-controlled global study is now underway to determine the effectiveness of NAET on autism spectrum disorder.

The study will include a group of 1,500 autistic children.

Locally, there are a few openings left.

In order to qualify, children must be within the ages of 3 and 10 years old. They must also have a diagnosis of autism from a psychologist, neurologist or psychiatrist.  Part of the screening will include blood tests for immunoglobulin E allergies, a five-minute video and functional testing.

Children will receive over $2,500 worth of free treatments and testing.

After completion of the treatments for 36 food groups, both the treatment and placebo group will be reevaluated for all initial evaluations, except the blood test.

Children in the placebo group will be offered free treatments after they complete the study.

If you are interested participating in this study, you may send your child’s detailed information to austinacuservices@gmail.com or alamoheightswellness@gmail.com to register.
